studied pop & jazz music at the Pop & Jazz Conservatory in Helsinki and composition with Kaija
Saariaho and Eero Hämeenniemi as well as musicology at the University of Helsinki. In 1993-1994
he studied musicology and research at the I.P.E.M. (Instituut voor Psychoacustica en Electronische
Muziek) in Gent / Belgium.

In 2006 Markku Nikula tought jazz music theory at the University of Helsinki. At present he teaches music theory at the "Helsinki Metropolia University for Applied Sciences" and is a member
of the Korvat Auki! ry (Ears Open! Society). For his longtime research on arabic music he is one
of the few western experts on the item.
